WALPOLE’S ‘HEART FOUNDATION’ CHARITY RIDE
Team Suzuki Press Office – September 20.
Motorcycle Industry Marketing and PR man Tim Walpole is supporting the ‘British Heart Foundation’ this month by tackling the Manchester to Blackpool night cycle ride.
Following years of prevaricating as to why he shouldn’t do numerous forms of exercise - other than getting up in the morning and lifting a fork of food or glass of drink above elbow height – the former Rizla Suzuki MotoGP Press Officer has finally taken the plunge and done something about getting a bit fitter. So, after deciding to do something for charity, Walpole settled for cycling and a bike and event was chosen.
This cycling charity event - the route is approximately 52 miles – is not one of the longest, but it is one of the more unusual ones. It starts at the Trafford Centre in Manchester and passes through Walkden, Chorley and Preston, before joining the coast to enter Blackpool through Lytham St Annes. Finally it finishes at Blackpool's Tower Headlands, near the famous Tower, and the town’s council has kindly agreed to keep both the Tower, and the famous Illuminations, lit to help guide the cyclists to the finish line, so it's a case of seeing the light at the end!
The 2012 Manchester to Blackpool Night Ride gets underway late at night on the 29th September, just as the Lancashire pubs and clubs are spilling out on to the streets and hopefully ends before the sun rises the following morning.
Walpole, who has lost four stones in weight since starting training, said: “When I decided to do this I was very unfit and a couple of short rides made me question the sanity of what I’d decided, because I was unable to even get up the hill out of the town! I continued though as I had signed up to the charity and once I told people about it I realised how many others have been touched by heart problems. I have also been touched by how much has been pledged already and, as the saying goes, ‘every little bit helps.’ Training for this has certainly given me the bug for cycling and I’m pretty sure I’ll be taking on something more adventurous next year – if riding up Blackpool prom in the early hours dressed in Lycra isn’t daring enough!”
Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor Walpole and donations will be quickly processed and passed to BHF. Virgin Money Giving is a not-for-profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. Just visit Walpole’s fundraising page at:
