MOTORLAND ARAGON NEXT FOR TEAM SUZUKI ECSTAR
Team Suzuki Press Office - October 14.
The MotoGP paddock heads straight from Le Mans to Aragon to face the middle race in a triple-header of events this weekend and for Team Suzuki Ecstar, the track in the Teruel region of Spain holds plenty of promise after strong results for both riders in the past.
This year sees Aragon host its 10th MotoGP event, with the track added to the calendar back in 2010 having been purpose built as a home for many types of motorsport with state of the art facilities. The 5km long circuit has proved popular due to its multitude of corners as well as a few elevation changes thrown into the mix. A huge stone wall reaches from one of the lowest points to the highest, and this has become an iconic symbol of the race track, making it instantly recognisable.
Last time out, in Le Mans, Joan Mir did a great job to limit the damage in the title chase. An extremely tricky weekend with cold and rain was challenging for Mir, as he has very little experience of riding a MotoGP bike in the wet, but he battled hard to gain as many positions as possible, closing the race in 11th and losing just two points in the standings. He enters Aragon with a 10 point deficit to the leader. He took victory in 2017 at MotorLand, and despite struggling last season, he likes the circuit so will be aiming for a strong finish.
Alex Rins had misfortune in France, having charged through the pack from 16th to second he suffered a crash which would see him unable to finish the race. However, the feeling he found with his GSX-RR during the tough conditions of the Grand Prix gave him confidence for Aragon - an event which he considers a home race due to nearby family ties. Having finished in the Top 5 several times at MotorLand, Rins is ready to be battling at the front again this weekend.
Davide Brivio - Team Manager:
“Normally in Aragon our bike is quite competitive and we’ve had good results here in the past. The conditions will be different to what we’re used to as the event is happening one month later than usual - the temperatures will be lower and there could be rain, so the weather could play a part. But we’re keen to get going and see what we can do.”
Joan Mir:
“It’s nice to come to Aragon just after France, because I feel like I’m getting used to the colder circuits and how to manage them. But in the end everywhere is different so we won’t truly know the situation until we start riding. Aragon is a track that I really like and I come here feeling good, I’m still close to the top of the standings and I managed to conserve some points last time out. I’m ready to go.”
Alex Rins:
“Aragon is a track that I know well, and the main objective for me will be to qualify in a better position than last week. When you start far back on the grid there’s more pressure and nerves and it’s easier to get caught up where you don’t want to be. My pace in France before the crash was really good and I’m happy to come here and try my best.”
